MLD AND FERTILITY

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a therapy which is designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system and the natural drainage of the lymph more efficiently. This is primarily achieved through gentle, light rhythmic and pumping techniques to the skin which stimulate the contraction of the lymphatic vessels.

Blood is pumped around the body via the circulatory system.  The lymphatic system has no pump; instead it depends on intrinsic contraction of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of the lymph vessels (peristalsis) and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph towards the lymph nodes.  MLD encourages the contraction of the lymph vessels, thereby increasing the rate of absorption of fluid and waste products from the surrounding tissues to the lymph nodes. It is in the lymph nodes where the lymph is cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other metabolic waste.  It is a non-invasive way to remove excess fluid and waste products more quickly.

FERTILITY AND MLD

Immunological factors are increasing believed to be a contributing factor in infertility issues. A well functioning lymphatic system plays an important part in the body’s immune responses.  The lymphatic system has a key role in the circulation of hormones and has been shown to be highly beneficial to oestrogen levels which stimulate the production of Luteinising Hormone (LH), which in turn stimulates ovulation.

Due to sedentary lifestyles, diet and disease, a sluggish lymphatic system is unable to eliminate its waste efficiently and can result in a build up of lymph and/or create blockages.  MLD improves the function of the lymphatic system by re-circulating body fluids, hormones and stimulates the immune system.

MLD detoxifying, immune-balancing and relaxing effects can help cleanse the body prepare for conception and pregnancy and is an ideal accompaniment for natural and assisted fertility.  MLD is a good option for women who are not comfortable with needles.

In relation to pre-conception and fertility issues specifically, MLD can help with the following:

  • Balancing hormones and regulating a woman’s periods
  • Boosting the performance of the immune system
  • Detoxifying
  • Relieving fluid congestion
  • Helping with PMS symptoms

During pregnancy the treatment helps to:

  • Boost the immune system
  • Alleviate swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Improve the quality of sleep
  • Minimize and reduce stretch marks
  • Relieve painful breasts

MLD may also be useful prior to an IVF cycle or in between specific courses of fertility treatments. If you are following a detoxification program, it may be beneficial to have MLD treatments as part of the program
